MD, PD, PhD, Interventional Pain Medicine Specialist, FMH Anesthesiology
Dr. Paolo Maino is a specialist in anesthesiology and interventional pain management, with extensive experience in the management of postoperative and chronic pain, particularly in complex knee conditions.
He is Chief of the Anesthesia Department and Director of the Pain Management Center at the Neurocentro della Svizzera Italiana (EOC) in Lugano. He is also a lecturer (Privatdozent) at the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences of the University of Italian Switzerland (USI) and a member of the examination board of the European Society of Anesthesia (ESAIC).
Throughout his career, Dr. Maino has gained extensive international experience, training at centers of excellence such as the University of Oxford (United Kingdom) and the University of Melbourne (Australia). His clinical practice is currently focused on the treatment of complex pain and the use of advanced neuromodulation and interventional analgesia techniques.
In his daily work, he treats patients who, despite having undergone surgery, continue to suffer from significant pain and limited mobility, which significantly impacts their quality of life.
In recent years, he has developed a particular interest in the treatment of arthrofibrosis and persistent pain following knee surgery, conditions that are often difficult to manage and severely limit patients' quality of life.
For these patients, Dr. Maino has developed an innovative pain management protocol based on the temporary implantation of an epidural catheter connected to an infusion pump containing a local anesthetic, which can also be operated by the patient (a patient-controlled analgesia system).
This approach allows for:
The goal is to support the patient safely and with a personalized approach during the weeks following surgery, significantly improving the chances of functional recovery.
Dr. Maino works in close collaboration with orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, and other specialists as part of a multidisciplinary approach dedicated to the patient's comprehensive care.
He is also the author of numerous international scientific publications and is actively involved in the development of new therapeutic strategies for pain management.
