Orthopaedic Surgery

Our center collaborates with a team of orthopedic surgeons specialized in the treatment of arthrofibrosis.

Multidisciplinary treatment and supervision are fundamental when taking charge of the patient affected by this highly debilitating joint pathology, and the surgical approach is always the last option in case of failure of the specialist conservative approach. The setting is therefore always "rehabilitation first".
However, when the set goals can't be achieved, there is a joint evaluation between the physiotherapy and orthopedic team in order to decide how to proceed in managing the problem together with the patient.

Regarding the surgical intervention it is important:

  • use minimally invasive surgery as much as possible, with necessary lysis of adhesions without removal of all scar tissue to restore native anatomy
  • control of the bleeding using a cautery device. It is not recommended to use a cutting tool (razor) in order to minimize cell damage and bleeding
  • to avoid hypoxia it is important not to use a tourniquet during surgery unless it's absolutely necessary
  • it may be useful using nerve blocks, placed before or immediately after surgery, to minimize post-surgical pain and allow immediate passive movement with CPM.
